Circana reported that PlayStation unit sales in the United States fell 25% decline through August 2026, reaching the lowest since 2013 level for the brand.

PlayStation sales drop to 2013 levels

The downturn coincides with record-high console prices. The average amount paid for a new PlayStation reached $597 average price, a 20% price increase compared with the previous year. Both figures represent the highest values ever recorded in the U.S. market, according to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella.

Xbox experienced an even steeper fall, with unit sales down 33% decline over the same period. Microsofts hardware volume hit an all-time low, while its average selling price climbed to $529, a 26% price increase. The broader console market reflected similar pressure, with Nintendo Switch also posting a 15% drop in units sold.

PS5 maturity and PS6 anticipation shape market

Despite the hardware slump, Sonys digital ecosystem shows resilience. PlayStation Network revenue in the United States continued to grow, supported by strong digital game sales and subscription services. Recent releases and a robust catalog helped maintain user engagement even as physical console purchases slowed.

Analysts attribute part of the sales dip to a generational transition. PS5 has entered its mature phase, and many consumers are postponing purchases while awaiting the next platform, PS6. The expectation of a new console, combined with high current prices, encourages buyers to delay spending. Industry observers note that this pattern is typical when a major platform approaches the end of its lifecycle.

The contrast between hardware decline and ecosystem strength suggests the market is experiencing a normal transition rather than a fundamental collapse. While the 25% drop marks the weakest PlayStation performance since 2013, the underlying digital business remains healthy. If the upcoming PS6 launch and major game releases such as Grand Theft Auto VI restore consumer confidence, hardware sales could rebound, provided pricing and component availability improve.
